The HOFA IQ-Series Limiter V2 is the mastering limiter that allows you to achieve maximum transparency even when going for high loudness. It can also be used effectively as a sound design tool to add more punch, saturation and musical pumping.

6 outstanding algorithms
The name says it all: in Transparent mode, the limiter works almost inaudibly and prevents distortion efficiently. This mode is ideal for all genres in which natural sound is more important than maximum loudness.
Hard mode, on the other hand, was developed for maximum loudness. It makes transients sound very direct, and harmonics intensify the sound in any way you like – perfect for heavy genres.
Bass-heavy music needs its own mode. The IQ-Series Limiter V2 offers the Electronic mode especially for this. With low-frequency audio, it delivers a particularly powerful sound without interfering artifacts.
You can also choose from the award-winning Fast, Med and Slow algorithms from the previous version. This means that the limiter is fully downward compatible.
Innovative user interface
Shape the limiter’s sound by simply using the XY pad, without worrying about countless technical parameters.
Moving on one axis, you can change the sound more towards clipping. Adding more harmonics results in a squarer visualization.
The other axis softens the sound and modifies it towards “musical pumping”. Here, too, the visualization in the background provides you with visual control.
By combining the two parameters in the XY pad, you can quickly achieve the optimal setting for your production – from perfectly transparent to extremely heavy or somewhere in between.
Precise metering
An informative metering section lets you always keep an eye on the loudness. You can see the level reduction, output level, loudness, loudness range and true peak. Clicking on these values resets the displays.
The time chart shows you many of the values in the timeline. This allows you to see exactly how the limiter is processing the signal.
Channel link
Use the channel link slider to specify how much the channels influence each other. The default setting is 100%, which means that the left and right channels are always processed simultaneously. This ensures a stable stereo image but can cost some loudness. At 0 %, the channels are processed completely independently of each other.
Additional features
The DC cut removes frequencies below 5 Hz to filter inaudible signal components and create more headroom for limiting. The phase shift up into the bass range can colour the sound and increase the loudness.
Depending on the playback device, intersample peaks can lead to unwanted distortion. Activating the True Peak function helps to avoid this.
Dither adds a low-level noise to avoid quantization errors when exporting at lower bit rates. For this purpose, the limiter should be the last link in your mastering chain.
Oversampling reduces aliasing effects by processing the audio signal at higher sampling rates. Values between 2x and 8x are recommended to keep the CPU load in check.

Option 2: Creative Sound Design with the XY pad
Not every production needs the most discreet limiting possible. Modern pop, rock, and electronic productions often benefit from the character a limiter adds to the master – from the direct punch of transients to the musical pumping of electronic tracks. This is exactly where the XY pad comes into play with the Transparent and Hard algorithms: Use the Clip parameter (for harmonics, saturation, and impact) and the Pump parameter (for smooth dynamic modulation and musical breathing) to transform the limiter from a mere loudness booster into an active sound design tool. You decide whether you want completely transparent limiting or to consciously add character to your production – with no complicated technical parameters.

What is true-peak limiting?
True-peak limiting means that so-called intersample peaks are also dealt with. These are level peaks that occur between digital samples and can cause distortion when converting the signal from digital to analog. The IQ Limiter V2 is a genuine true-peak limiter and actively prevents such intersample peaks by activating the true-peak function.
How does the XY Pad work?
The XY Pad is one of the most innovative features of the IQ Limiter V2 and is available in Hard and Transparent modes. It combines two parameters:
- Y-axis (CLIP): Adds harmonics and shifts the sound towards clipping for more punch and presence
- X-axis (PUMP): Shifts the sound towards a ‘musical pump’ for a softer, more dynamic character
The combination of both parameters allows you to shape the sound intuitively – from perfectly transparent to extremely aggressive.
What are the metering options in the limiter?
The IQ Limiter V2 features comprehensive metering in accordance with EBU R 128:
- Short Term LUFS – loudness measurement at short intervals
- Integrated LUFS – loudness of the overall signal
- Loudness Range (LRA) – dynamic range
- True Peak – true level peaks including intersample peaks
- Time Chart – visual representation of input, output, gain reduction and short-term loudness in a timeline
What is a DC cut and why is it useful in limiting?
A DC cut function removes extremely low frequencies that are inaudible but reduce headroom. The phase shift in the bass range can colour the sound and increase its loudness. When you activate the DC cut on the IQ-Series Limiter V2, it is set at 5 Hz.
Does it have a sidechain input?
Yes, the IQ-Limiter V2 features an external sidechain input. This allows you to use an external signal to control the limiter – useful for creative mixing effects or specific processing of dynamics.

What can you do with the Channel Link feature?
The Channel Link function controls the extent to which the left and right channels influence each other:
- 100% (default): Both channels are processed simultaneously – consistent stereo image, the mono centre is always perceived exactly in the middle of the panorama
- 0%: Channels are processed independently of each other – maximum loudness
- Intermediate values: proportional effect
For surround productions, stereo pairs (L/R, LS/RS) are coupled; at values above 100%, they are also linked to the centre channel.
How do you use the limiter in mastering?
- Insert the IQ Limiter V2 as the last plugin in your mastering chain
- Select a suitable mode depending on the genre
- Adjust the input gain to achieve the desired loudness
- Enable True Peak to avoid intersample peaks
- Keep an eye on the LUFS values in line with your vision for loudness and dynamics
- Use dithering when exporting to lower bit rates (e.g. 16-bit for CD)

Dieser Limiter ist einfach brutal gut für Lautheit – aber ohne kaputt zu machen, was man vorher aufgebaut hat. Gerade auf Bass-heavy Tracks liefert der „Electronic“-Modus so einen klaren, aufgeräumten Punch.
Ich hab ihn erst wegen des XY-Pads getestet, war aber schnell überzeugt: Damit lassen sich echt musikalische Kompromisse eingehen, die früher viel Trial & Error gebraucht hätten. Dazu True Peak, Dither, Oversampling – alles dabei, was relevant ist.

Ein unglaublich flexibler Limiter.
Seien wir ehrlich, die Wahl des Limiters am Ende eines Masters macht mich immer etwas nervös. Nach langem, manchmal mühseligen mixing, vorsichtigem rebalancing, etwas saturation und dann kontrolliertem Clipping erreichst du einen Klang, mit dem du zufrieden bist. Nun brauchst du aber noch 3-5 db Gain damit der Kunde zufrieden ist, denn er will ja einen Master bei -4LUFs haben. Also werden Limiter durchprobiert, verglichen, in Reihe geschaltet usw. der HOFA IQ Limiter ist meine Geheimwaffe. Er bleibt unglaublich transparent, lässt den Mix offen, lässt die Transienten lebendig und schiebt den gesamten Mix nach vorn. Ich mag den Klang so gern, dass ich mich manchmal richtig überwinden muss, ihn meinen Kolleginnen und Kollegen weiterzuempfehlen, weil ich ihn fast schon ein bisschen für mich behalten möchte 😉 Top Empfehlung für die Secret Sauce im Master!

Ich hab einfach mal das Update gemacht mit dem Limiter und bin richtig happy! Immer noch hat man nicht zu viele Regler. Aber inzwischen kann man einfach schnell ganz verschiedene Sounds im Master limiten. Und irgendwie klingen die verschiedenen Versionen tatsächlich unterschiedlich, aber immer cool! Dieser Limiter gehört zur Spitzenklasse in dem Bereich. Auch wenn man nicht immer alle Features voll ausnutzt (Beispiel Channel Link) ist dieser Limiter Präzise und bietet tolle Möglichkeiten, den Klang zu beeinflussen. Die Anzeigen lassen alle wichtigen Parameter erkennen. Die Limiting Anzeige, die zeigt, wie stark der Limiter wo eingreift, gehört zum heutigen Standard in solchen Plugins. Also auch vom UI her top.
