HOFA XMAS MIX CONTEST Blog
Time for a short review:-) We heard more than 700 mixes and remixes in the jury. There were absolute beginners as well as “audio old stagers” and the range of mixes was immense. We realized once more what a fantastic use of time it is to produce and mix music and how many people put so much energy and dedication into this hobby – or into this job.
There were loud mixes and quiet, bright, dark and mid-focussed ones, dry and ambient ones – everything. What we found quite often, was that many participants couldn’t resist the temptation to process their mixes with M/S tools and in the end received overly wide, phasing mixes. M/S editing can be cool, but you shouldn’t push too hard:-)
We say thank you to all participants – it was great fun again this year! Let’s look forward together to the next XMAS MIX CONTERST – this will be the tenth:-)
February 8, 2018 | We are still busy with the 100 raffled analyses and send them out in the next days.
February 7, 2018: And the winners are …
After listening to more than 700 mixes and remixes, analysing and comparing them (in anonymized form of course!), it was finally decided: The jury selected the winners of the main prizes for the best mix and remix and also the awardees of the various special prizes.
But we would also like to thank all those who took part in this big contest and made it such a fine event – it won’t be the last XMAS MIX CONTEST!
Main Prize Best Mix:
This year’s winner is Simon Gasser from Zürich, (Switzerland). His mix convinced the jury with its professional overall-sound: very good leveling and a persuasive ambience make for a homogenous result. The most decisive element though was the chorus part with its perfect mixture of a powerful beat and harmonic sounds – congratulations!
Simon is working as a freelancer and “audio-handyman” for various promotion and corporate productions. His DAW is Cubase and he used various plugins as well as hardware compressors. His monitoring is made on Klein+Hummel O300.
Main Prize Best Remix:
The winning remix this year comes from David Mason (Delaware/USA). His electronic mix convinced the jury with its creative and highly musical approach, its professional sound and consistent style and of course the perfectly chopped vocals.
David is working as a freelance producer after graduating from Ithaca College in 2015 with a degree in Sound Recording Technology.
The remix of “Wahrheit” was done entirely in the box, the DAW in use was Ableton Live. David used the ableton built in plugins a lot, but also the Soundtoys pack and Serum/Massive for synths. The monitoring was made on Yamaha HS5 and Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones.
To get the elaborately processed vocals, he mixed down choir, worked with EQs and saturations. These sounds were layered with synths and even some electricity samples to achieve the impactful hits featured in the chorus.
This year we had great partners with ADAM Audio, Shure, Steinberg and Toontrack. The Specials Prized were sponsored by these partners:

Welcome to the 9th XMAS MIX CONTEST!
For the ninth time, HOFA presents the contest with a prize money of 2 x 1000 € – for the best mix and the best remix of our contest song. In addition, there are Special Awards for outstanding mixes, donated by our supporters Steinberg, Toontrack, Adam Audio and Shure. Some of the Special Awards will go the winners of the combined online and jury vote. So it definitely pays to get some votes 🙂
100 mix-analyses are raffled from all uploaded songs. This analysis gives you a feedback to your mix and points out strenghts and weaknesses – that alone makes your work worthwhile!
This year’s song “Wahrheit” is written and produced by HOFA CEO Jochen Sachse and performed by vocalist Stefanie Lenk, the regular singer of Jochen Sachse’s project INI – this time supported by a gospel choir with 50 singers!
The following video is playing the mix by Jochen Sachse. This mix is supposed to be neither reference nor template, but may give a picture of Jochen’s idea of the song. He’s not in the jury, by the way 🙂 There are some insights in the recordings and the production as well.
“Wahrheit” is a modern pop song with both acoustic and electronic sounds. The choir arrangement adds natural depth and dimension to the song – this should be audible in your mix.
Like always, it’s allowed to trigger drums, to re-room, to master and to copy & paste or to leave out several elements.
For the sake of fairness it’s not allowed to add new tracks or to change the tempo or the structure of the song.
The jury is looking for harmonious sound characteristics with balanced levels that fits in the genre and a well defined spatial definition.
Your options for the remix are endless: be creative and use those tracks you want and add whatever you like. Nothing’s forbidden – but of course the song should still be recognisable 🙂
The tempo of the song is 130 bpm, the tracks are on hand as 24 bit wav files in 44.1 kHz and 96 kHz.
ANYBODY CAN JOIN IN !
Copy the folder with the tracks on your computer and do your best.
Send us your mix as a stereo track (mastered or not-mastered) – and maybe your work convinces the jury and you win the reward of 1000 € for the best mix or remix.
And if not, you have had a good time in your studio with christmassy music 🙂 – and with recordings in a more than day-to-day quality.
Closing date is January 22, 2018
